PART III THE SPHERE OF PRAGMATIC DISCOURSE

Whenever a theory appears to you as the only possible one, take this as a sign that you have understood neither the theory nor the problem which it was intended to solve.

—Karl Popper

INTRODUCTION

The State and Its Dreams

For generations, the Jews dreamt a double dream: they dreamt of liberation from the rule of Gentiles and they dreamt of a life in the Land of Israel. The Zionist movement made both these dreams a reality. Israelis living in a free and sovereign Israel today do not always recognize that they represent a realization of these dreams. But the State of Israel did not just realize dreams—it also destroyed them. At the moment of its birth, Israel’s founding father David Ben-Gurion made three painful ideological concessions: he sacrificed the state’s secular character, he supported the partition of the land, and he compromised on the vision of socialism.
